June 10th, 11th & 12th

Finally in Alaska!
This was the Visitor’s Center in Skagway. The whole front is covered in drift wood that came ashore in the harbor. Anybody looking for a new idea to side the house with?

We were hoping for a boat tour so we could hear the “white thunder” or the glaciers plunge into the sea, but that plan was not going to happen. Instead we went up in a little 5 seater Bush Hawk plane to fly over Glacier Bay. It was definitely a view worth seeing!
I have not had the chance to put the video together or extract pictures yet...they are coming!
Can you spot the bear in the above photo?
When you are as far North as we are, the days are very long and it doesn't ever get really dark...maybe just dusk. We parked the RV at a road side stop along the mountains a little after midnight. Lars went out to take some night photos with extended shutter time. When he did, by his surprise, he saw that a bear was walking straight toward him. The bear had crawled up the hill and was at the back corner of the Jeep, so the bear was between Lars and the RV (about 25-30 feet away). Lars shined a flashlight in his eyes and the bear began to walk a little sideways away from the RV, which gave Lars the opportunity to get back to the RV.

The bear appears as a ghost at the back corner of the Jeep. The picture was taken around midnight with a 15 second open shutter and the bear was moving, so he appears to be a ghost.

Lars' pocket light was able to light the bear up for a better view. The bear hung around for at least an hour and half or so.

Wow, We Made It out of the Mud!
When we woke up this morning, we were told that Highway 37 would only be open for one lane of traffic for a couple of hours, so if we were heading north, we should go now. We did the hurry up and wait thing…and this was some of the equipment that was buried in the mudslide.

Not Much Happenin'...waiting to leave Bell II
We had a very lazy day waiting (hoping) the road would open. No such luck, but we did decide that we needed to walk down to the river’s edge and have a campfire and see if we could find any bears or was that beers?
