well the mountain got to decide for us. We were within an hour of our planned stop for camping, but a mudslide came rumbling down and blocked the road. We had heard on the radio that there was a mud slide on Highway 37, but one lane was able to pass as crews continued to clean up the debris. About 10 minutes before we came to that spot another mud slide tore through the area and blocked the road. the slide covers about 200 yards long and about 6 feet off the surface of the road. We were planning stay about a mile up the road until the cleaning crew was able to clear the area. For safety sake we had to return to a lodge area called Bell II. Bummer.
This guy is not going anywhere fast...he has no way to back up or turn around. He will be there a while.
They pulled down the gates behind us so that no other traffic could come or go...we may be able to get through tomorrow afternoon. We looked at trying to go around...which is not so easy, since there are few roads. Lars calculated that it would take us 30 drive hours and about $1000 to go around the slide...Guess we are staying, at least the scenery is wonderful.
Before all of this excitement we did get to see two black bears in two different locations while traveling along Highway 37, and we were thinking of staying at this campground, where you could see Bear Glacier in the background.
Highway 37 gave us spectacular views of snowy mountains and glaciers with alpine lakes.

We are hoping to make it to Skagway, Alaska by Thursday (hopefully, with no more delays). It's about a 12 hour drive from where we are now.
